Schumacher changes engine; what it means

Michael Schumacher has been forced to change an engine in part ferme due to an problem. The engine was the 5th unit Schumacher has used this season and has been replaced with one he has already used.

The rules changed in the last couple of years so that engines can be changed without penalty as long as a driver does not exceed his allocation of 8 engines for the season.

However it does mean that the engine which was taken out cannot be raced again, which is a setback for the Mercedes team, with 20 races to cover with 8 engines.

Most drivers were on either their fourth or fifth engines, with only Charles Pic in Marussia, using a sixth engine at this race.

James , sort of on subject , a question about gearbox’s ..

again they are allowed a certain amount of gearbox’s per season correct ? but i heard them saying this weekend that they are allowed to choose the gear ratio’s …

what i dont under stand is , how can they be allowed to change ratios but not allowed to change the gearbox ? when they change ratios can they change bearings etc at the same time ?

just does not make much sense to me ..




You have to be able to change ratios (the actual gears themselves) from track to track, some places you need longer 2nd gear, or 7th gear or whatever and Hungary to Spa ad Monza are very different tracks. . But the gearbox itself, the casing and operational part have to last five races.


James – why don’t RBR change their gear ratio to take advantage of the DRS? Time after time, you see Webber stuck behind cars and not being able to pass under DRS. You would think that knowing that they’ve qualified poorly, that they will need the additional speed. Its different to previous years where they led from the front. Perhaps the team’s mindset hasn’t change to suit the current performance reality?


Is there any leeway in the case of accident damage. For example if any of the cars involved in the pile up at Spa found there was damage to the engine as a result of that accident and had to change the engine?




Formula 1 has it easy.

MotoGP has 6 engines for 18 races. The power output per litre is about the same too.


MotoGP probably doe snot spend as much time at full throttle.

Interesting, Ferrari seem to have the most durable engine.


Well the most durable because maybe Massa is not pushing enough… would like to see Barrichello coming back to Ferrari!!!

Yeah noticed that as well. Mecedes may have the highest horsepower, but Ferrari has the most durable..


Interesting that Alonso has one more race engine over his rivals. That could be critical at the sharp end of the season!


Yes, but he otherwise lost a potential 25 points and a major slice of his lead. Not sure what is worse, especially if his car does not work as well as a competitor’s in the run up to the season finale.

Could Alonso be allowed to replace one engine extra, if the one used in Spa happens to be damaged in accident ?


Now at least Alonso has one more engine to use – the Spa one.

What i knew was that a team could use its 8 engines in any fashion.

James plz throw some light on this ?


A race constitutes of qualifying and race.

When an engine is used as a race engine and exchanged during or after race you can only use it as friday and saturday free practice engines.


What about testing? Can they have another engine to test with?


Testing is separate


Huh? That’s it? I certainly was expecting a longer piece of article, probably more insights into how the remaining races will be played, etc…
