Today we are launching a new feature on the JA on F1 website – an online auction to raise money for the Grand Prix Mechanics Trust.

I’m delighted to say that the first item we have under the hammer is a signed set of F1 racing overalls from one of the fans’ favourite drivers, Kamui Kobayashi. These genuine Sauber racing overalls, manufactured to exacting F1 safety standards, from fireproof material by Puma, have be worn this season by Kamui and he has signed them. Just to buy a set of unbranded Puma overalls of this standard would cost over £1000, so please be generous. You can place your bid by clicking here BID NOW

The 24 year old Japanese Kobayashi exploded onto the F1 scene last season with fighting drives in Brazil and Abu Dhabi for Toyota. This season he has also captured the fans’ hearts with some battling drives in the Sauber, particularly his attack on Fernando Alonso in Valencia. He has been voted Driver of the Day several times this year by JA on F1 readers.

The auction starts today and will end after Sunday’s Brazilian Grand Prix at 9pm UK time. So get your bids in and keep checking to see how you are getting on. And remember it’s all in aid of a very good cause, the Grand Prix Mechanics Trust.

The Trust was founded by Sir Jackie Stewart and counts Martin Brundle, Patrick Head and me among its Trustees. For over 20 years the Trust has helped a wide range of mechanics and is actively engaged in advising and helping current and past mechanics. There are now a growing number of older F1 mechanics, who reached retirement without a company pension, health insurance or similar, because this things weren’t common in the old days. Often it is as they get older, long after they have left the security of their F1 team that in times of hardship, they or their families need help and assistance.

A big thank you to our partner Grand Prix Legends, who have developed this auction site with us.

Sorry that something went wrong, repeat again!

Hi James,

Sorry my comments are not related to this post, but I was wondering if you will be doing a feature on the new Ferrari theme park that is due to open soon in Abu Dhabi (if it hasn’t already opened)?

From what I’ve read, and the very few images I’ve seen, it looks and sounds incredible, but more interestingly it, it really shows Ferrari’s marketability and intentions with such a massive project.

Obviously Ferrari have been in partnership with a number of organisations from this part of the world for a few years now, but I’d love to know the details of such a project and the huge impact it will have on not only Ferrari, but also F1.

Cheers, and love the site!

I will be in Abu Dhabi next week and if time allows I’d love to think I’ll get a look around. It wasn’t open when I was there on the Fan Ambassador programme in September

Great, thanks James. Hopefully you get a chance and are therefore able to give some feedback.

i will bid, $100 AU. Also i will put you up in my house for the Melbourne GP. That includes all meals (homecooked) chauffer driven vehicle to and from the track in family truckster and also a guaranteed wake up call every morining in the form of three alarms, aged 6,4 & 3.

Bring on the Banzai driver too…..he cant take up too much room

Sounds very appealing, but we are trying to raise as much as poss for the GPMCT. Thanks for the offer!

Hope you raise a load of cash from this James. Would love to bid but sadly I don’t earn quite as much as say, Alonso! 🙂

Like mentioned above, would it be possible to do a feature showing exactly what a mechanical/team personnel has to do over the course of a weekend. Would be great to get an insight into their racing lives, their families thoughts on a mechanic being away so much of the year etc.

Cheers for all your hard work James!

How about his hemelt? I would love to wear at when I enter national karting championship final round.
By the way, James, I am curious to know what are the team bosses reaction on his performance?
Surely he is one of the fans favorite, he reminded us what racing is all about, but has he done enough to take Mark Webber red bull’s seat in future?

Off topic:

I like the Ayrton Senna banner in top of the screen. Really a great idea.

Do you have any news regarding the film?

Interested in hearing about that too.

@Sammy: Here are the options that were on the table [ ] Hope you like.

PS: James. What a good video. Nice one

What size are they?!

Very small by the look of him!

Judging by how he drives sometimes, extra large in the groin area.

Kamui Kobayashi: Height 1.7 m, Weight 57 kg.

Don’t ask me what that is in feet, inches and pounds.

Hi James,

Great video – really interesting to get this kind of “behind the scenes” look at the world of F1. Any chance we could see some kind of feature/article on current mechanics – what do they earn, what is their typical weekend like? We really know so little about them.

Great site by the way!

Great idea! Would be very interesting to have a feature on say the life of a mechanic etc…
