McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh believes Kimi Raikkonen wants to leave Lotus but thinks the Finn will ultimately end up staying with the Enstone-based team next season. Lotus boss Eric Boullier has said he is optimistic of keeping Raikkonen, amid speculation the team is struggling with its finances, but the Finn has been linked with a move to Ferrari and Red Bull. McLaren’s managing director Jonathan Neale believes it will be “a real challenge” for the team to contend for race victories in the second half of the season. Britain’s Jenson Button and Mexican Sergio Perez have not managed to finish on the podium this season with Button’s fifth place in China McLaren’s best result. McLaren are a team who are used to winning races however they are facing the prospect of their first winless season since 2006 and second since 1996. The Woking-based team finished last year with the fastest car, as Jenson Button claimed victory in the season finale at Interlagos in Brazil. However, the team chose to radically change the design of their car and have since struggled to understand and successfully develop it.
