It has been confirmed that Caterham Sporting director Steve Nielsen will leave the team in January after two years as Sporting Director. He is understood to be moving to a different team. Nielsen was part of the group alongside Mike Gascoyne and Bob Bell at the Renault team in the early 2000s and was there through the Alonso years right up to the move to the black and gold of Lotus Renault GP in 2011, when he moved on to Caterham. Caterham’s sporting director Steve Nielsen expects the wider of package of upgrades that the team first trialled on the CT01 at the Mugello test to reappear on the car at some point in the forthcoming races, when he also thinks John Iley’s impact will begin to be felt. The Norfolk-based outfit tested a number of updates, principally a new exhaust layout, on the car at Mugello the week before the Spanish GP but only a new rear wing survived for the race weekend after the team didn’t find sufficient performance gains. Team Lotus has announced that Steve Nielsen will be joining the team as Sporting Director next month. He will perform a similar role to Sam Michael at McLaren and Ron Meadows at Mercedes, overseeing the way the team operates at the race track, liasing with the FIA Race Director, attending stewards meetings and working alongside the engineers to get the most from the package at any given race weekend.
