Daniel Ricciardo did not have an easy time of it in his F1 debut at Silverstone. The conditions were tricky for all the drivers, but especially for one who was racing in the full glare of public attention for the first time. But what was really interesting about his race for me was learning that there is an art to backmarkerdom, which drivers in that position must learn. Basically if you drive a Hispania or one of the slower cars, you are going to be lapped several times by the leader during a race and by plenty of other cars More…

Just before the weekend Hispania Racing Team (HRT) confirmed that Australian Daniel Ricciardo will race for the team starting at Silverstone, in place of Narain Kartikeyan. HRT is around four seconds a lap off the pace in qualifying this season, an improvement of a second and a half over last season. In Canada Tonio Liuzzi qualified a tenth of a second faster than Timo Glock, but in Valencia the gap was a second and in Barcelona it was half a second. The 22 year old Red Bull sponsored driver has been doing the Toro Rosso Friday testing duties, bit it More…

At last weekend’s Australian Grand Prix, Hispania Racing’s Narain Kartikeyan and Tonio Liuzzi became the first drivers to not qualify for a Formula 1 Grand Prix for almost a decade. There’s no shame in that; Niki Lauda and Nelson Piquet once failed to qualify for a race, in the days when there were far more teams than places on the grid. Having failed in its attempt to buy the Toyota cars, the team decided to build its own car very late. It failed to turn a wheel in pre season testing and was still being built when practice began on More…

The final piece in the driving jigsaw for the 2011 season fell into place today as Hispania announced Tonio Liuzzi as its second driver alongside Narain Karthikeyan. It’s good that the team has gone for someone with speed and experience, rather than opt for a pay driver as they were forced to do last season, with Sakon Yamamoto. Liuzzi has raced for team principal Colin Kolles before and although his record in F1 is rather mixed, he undoubtedly has speed and an ability to get results. It’s just stringing results together consistently that he’s not managed to do in F1. More…

The second official test starts on Thursday at Jerez in Spain and in the last couple of days we have had the launch of the new Virgin and Force India cars. Hispania has yet to launch, but it released some images of the car today, just in front of Force India. It also announced that it will not take part in the Jerez test but will instead test in Italy on a Pirelli filming day. Virgin held a showbiz event at the BBC TV Centre on Monday. The car is the second F1 product from the digital nerve centre at More…

Hispania Racing Team, 0 wins, 0 poles, 11th in Constructors’ Championship Mmmm. Where to start when thinking about Hispania Racing? What was their 2010 season about? An exercise in survival, certainly. But to what end? Is there a future for the team? Who will design and build their car next year? These are all intangible questions. In practical terms Hispania was a struggle from start to finish in 2010. The team was still building the cars as the season got underway in Bahrain, with Karun Chandhok’s first run in the car being in qualifying. The team was born at the More…

“Hispania Racing, and Dallara Automobili S.p.A have agreed that what they have achieved in such a short period of time was more than could have been reasonably expected. The two parties wish each other the best of luck in all future endeavours.” So ends a strange episode in F1. Dallara was originally hired by Campos Meta to design, build and develop a chassis for the 2010 season. But when Campos ran into financial trouble in February, the team was taken over in a last minute deal by Jose Ramon Carabante and his chosen team principal Colin Kolles was never happy More…
