Red Bull’s preferred method of winning races is to do the damage to the opposition at the start, create a margin and then manage the race from there. Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel finally won his home race with a thrilling victory in the German Grand Prix that saw battles take place all the way to the chequered flag. Kimi Raikkonen, who has not won a race since the start of the season in Australia, pushed Vettel all the way before crossing the line second while Lotus team-mate Romain Grosjean claimed his second podium of the season with third. Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembery has said today that the company is not seeking to shirk responsibility for the failures at Silverstone. Mid week the company issued a report on the events of the British Grand Prix and appeared to be loading the blame onto the teams for misusing the tyres, which didn’t go down too well among some of the teams. The Strategy Report

The top three cars separated by less than three seconds with a handful of laps to go; it’s the ideal scenario for F1 racing and this is what we had in Germany. All three leaders had followed the same strategy of soft/medium/medium tyres, but this was a weekend which showed a lot about how far many teams have come in getting on top of the Pirelli tyres, which were described by some as a “lottery” early in the season. [Updated] Fernando Alonso won the German Grand Prix from pole position, his third win of the season and another stunning drive under intense pressure by the Spaniard, who increased his lead in the drivers’ championship to 34 points. The grid for this afternoon’s German Grand Prix has been revised reflecting the three penalties for drivers who had to change a gearbox, but also a penalty for Sergio Perez, who was docked five places by stewards for blocking. Mark Webber moves from the front row to eighth, while Romain Grosjean and Nico Rosberg compound what was already a poor qualifying position by slipping back to 20th and 22nd places. Fernando Alonso will start on pole for tomorrow’s German Grand Prix at Hockenheim after another rain affected qualifying session; another day for making the right decisions and being on the track at the right moment. Michael Schumacher brought out the red flag to end a wet day’s running in Germany, the seven times world champion losing control of his Mercedes towards the end of FP2 and crashing his car. It was another frustrating day for the teams, like Friday at Silverstone, with weather again the dominant story. McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh is promising the team’s underperforming MP4-27 will feature a number of “quite noticeable” upgrades at Hockenheim this weekend, as the Woking team bids to close back up in the championship battle before the summer break. Hockenheim alternates as host of the German GP with Nurburgring and the last event in 2010 was famous for Ferrari’s notorious team order, “Fernando is faster than you” to Felipe Massa. This should be an interesting race from a strategic point of view as Pirelli has never raced in F1 at the new Hockenheim and so the teams will be working hard during the practice sessions to figure out the best strategy for the weekend. Lewis Hamilton won a tense three way battle for victory in the German Grand Prix, beating Fernando Alonso and the pole sitter Mark Webber. It was Hamilton’s second win of the season and the 16th of his career. Team orders returned to the top of the agenda in Formula 1 today as Fernando Alonso took the win in the German Grand Prix thanks to his team mate Felipe Massa letting him through in the closing stages, despite leading the race from the start. Sebastian Vettel took pole position for tomorrow’s German Grand Prix, by just 2/1000ths of a second from Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso in a fantastic qualifying battle. It was Vettel’s sixth pole of the season and the 11th in his 54 Grands Prix, a ratio of 20%. It was a tough day today for Lewis Hamilton and the signs are that McLaren face a tough weekend with its main opposition looking strong. This weekend’s German Grand Prix will be a home Grand Prix for no fewer than six drivers, by some margin the largest contingent from any country in the 24 man F1 field. Three of them are in the top eight cars on the grid. I’m interested in a few things which are developing for this weekend’s German Grand Prix at Hockenheim. One is the weather, which looks wet for Friday and Saturday and then quite cool on Sunday at just 22 degrees. Another is the tyre choice, with super soft tyres at one end of the range and the hard tyre at the other end. This is in itself the first time we have had such a range, which will make things very interesting from a strategy point of view as their operating ranges are very different.
