F1 Competition: Predict the qualifying gap between Vettel and Alonso in Brazil

News

As the final round of the F1 season approaches, it’s time to run another prediction competition – at which JA on F1 readers always excel!

This weekend, we want to you to predict what the time gap will be between the two world title contenders, Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso in qualifying and in who’s favour.

So for example, if you think Vettel will be 0.35s faster in qualifying you would write “Vettel by 0.35s” in the comments section below.

**The prize is a signed and personalised copy of our new book “JA on F1 2012 – The Year of Living Dangerously”, ** which will be published on December 7th. The 248 page, large-format paperback book is priced at £10-99 and features the best articles from the JA on F1 site plus extensive new written content, photos from Darren Heath and a foreword by BBC F1 presenter Jake Humphrey. It’s available to order by clicking here: JA on F1 Book Order

The competition is **free to enter for readers anywhere in the world **and entries will close on Saturday morning at 11am UK time.

The winner will be the person who posted the correct answer first, so there’s a premium on getting your answer in quickly. But in the event that no-one is correct, we will take the closest guess.

I posted a quick sketch showing the deltas between VET and ALO practice and quali times here:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/psychemedia/8207706651/

I wonder if we can also anecdotally claim a sustained ‘direction of travel’ in improving eg quali time deltas through Q1, Q2 and into Q3. (For example, if VET improves going from Q1 to Q2, does there seem to be a good chance that the improvement will increase into Q3?)

Of course, the deltas may be misleading because they don’t take into account overall lap time….

Although I’m wary that the Red Bull keeps improving…

What happens if one of the 2 drivers does not qualify for Q3 and the other does? Will their respective times, from different qualifying sessions, be used for comparison? In that case I predict Alonso will qualify better by 2.657 seconds. It will be raining during qualifying 2 and Vettel will not make it to the top ten. Then the track will dry and all the drivers including Alonso will go faster in Q3.
