Aussies in F1 rally round for injured bike racer | James Allen on F1 – The official James Allen website on F1

Mark Webber and Sam Michael are among the Australian contingent in F1 who are clubbing together to raise money for legendary speedway rider Leigh Adams, who sustained serious injuries from an off-road motorcycle accident while training for the Finke Desert Race a few weeks ago.

Now he has a long rehabilitation in front of him.

Adams is a 10 times Australian speedway champion and he raced in the world championship, winning multiple Grands Prix before returning to Australia about 6 months ago. He’s essentially the Peter Brock of speedway in Australia!

Michael and Webber, both friends of Adams, along with the help of others, have managed to pull together some items to auction to raise money for his rehabilitation.

The items so far are:
Williams FW32 Rear Wing Mainplane (Signed)

Williams FW32 Front Wing Flap (Signed)

Red Bull RB4 Rear Wing Endplate (Signed by all F1 drivers)

Williams Technical Centre Tour

Belgian GP. Race Day Paddock Passes & Hospitality with Williams

DTM. VIP Weekend with HWA Mercedes

WTCC. VIP Weekend with Chevrolet

Various Driving Experiences, Germany

Webber is incredibly altruistic; whenever there is funraiding, young driver support or charitable work in F1 he seems to be at the centre of it. Nice one, Mark!

fundRAISING! I didn’t mean to suggest that Webber raids funds :)

This is the reality for so many injured racers, no strong support system as the money is just not there outside of the top tier.

Badly injured F1 drivers like Massa and Kubica get the very best care (as all should) but the same is not there a few rungs down.

Good on you Mark and Sam for helping out a fellow racer. Your true Aussie spirit is a credit to you both.

James – speaking of Australians, any chance you can do an article/post on how you think Ricciardo went in his first race?

I’ll try to do that. His main problem was losing time when being lapped – up to 4 seconds per blue flag

James , also looking forward to learning a bit more about Ricciardo’s drive as the lap times were all over the place.

Both MW and Sam will be missed when they move out of the mainstream. MW has even been known to support Kiwi’s so he is genuinely generous.

As an F1 and speedway fan, I had the privilege of watching Leigh on many occasions. He was a tremendously quick and intelligent rider and a great team player when riding for his club. I hope that the money raised can make a real difference to his rehabilitation. Good on the F1 contingent!
